EJones: A Bridge of Strength in a Business Emphasizing Weaknesses

“No matter how good I get, there’s always gonna be someone better than me. So I’m just trying to build a fanbase that’s real. If you like good lyrics, and you wanna hear a good story, then come listen to my stuff.”
There are a lot of talented musicians. There are also a lot of people that are pushing their way into the rap and hip-hop side of the music business. So who is EJones?
Ejones is a rapper/producer that comes to the audience with knowledge about both sides of the tracks. Originally from Richmond, VA, EJones later moved to a suburban neighborhood in Chesterfield, VA. Other than being mindful of different types of people from different parts, he sees the music business in a realistic point of view: everyone is fighting to get to the top, and you have to believe in yourself and work hard to get there.
“Back at home, people know who I am. They used to joke on me like, ‘ha ha EJones the rapper’. But now that they know me and my music, they say ‘Hey there’s EJones: the rapper’.”
One thing that stood out about this artist was his drive to get to his goals of making it big. He honestly believes in himself, which is important in a business that constantly tears you down. And not only is he strong, but he still can recognize that there’s always room for improvement.
“I have the lyrics. I’m working on a better flow right now. I’m a big storyteller. I’m gonna tell you about me, and I’m just gonna be real…tell people who I am. And sometimes I like to play with words. “
Strength doesn’t just produce itself out of thin air. It has to be created from inside yourself and radiated in music. EJones wears his strength and truly believes in himself. And his music group, the R.E.F. group, is his main foundation of his strength. Not only is this a music group, but to him this group is his family. And whenever there are any negative feeling towards his music or him as an artist, he shrugs his shoulders and says, “I mean everyone has an opinion. Not everyone is gonna like you. But you just have to R.E.F. at the haters. Just tell them ‘realize-fly’ and keep doing you.”
Realize-fly is where the R.E.F. name comes from, and it fits well with what they believe. They want to be themselves, and a little hate won’t stop it from happening. As for his message for future listeners, he provides a good description of him in a nutshell as an artist:
“There’s bound to be a song in your life that you can relate to. So feel free to listen to my music and like my page. There might be a song that you might not like or you might not be feeling. But stick around for a little bit. Give it a chance. If you don’t like it? Unlike the page. But give it a chance first. I’m trying to make it. Richmond rappers don’t always get the props they deserve because people think all Richmond rappers have the same style. I’m just trying to represent Richmond as a rapper that is lyrical and has something to say”.

Be sure to check out EJones The Star under the Artists tab of the blog! And here's a link to his facebook page as well!! Happy Listening!

EJones and News

Alright everyone, today is the day..it's Music Monday! There's nothing better than starting off the week with a new rapper from the Chesterfield/Richmond, VA area! This rapper believes he has what it takes to be different. He feels that being confident in your abilities and having a good music support system is the path to a successful future.

Be sure to keep a look out for his article later on today!

In other news:

"Triumph" by darius Mines comes out this week on Leap Day!! So keep checking his website (listed under the artists tab) for his release on Wednesday this week!

Era Hardaway's successful mixtape Slightly Hyped came out last week and has caused a lot of buzz here on campus! He also just announced that he will be performing at The National in Richmond, VA March 17th! If you like his mixtape, definitely be sure to check out where to get tickets to his show.

Also happening on March 17th is the "Ah Spring benefit Concert" at the Wesley House featuring John Dawson (a future featured artist on the blog), F.A.O.D., Enfuced, Maxwell Hunter, Uncommon Ground as well as Darius Mines.

Micah Davis recently posted a new video for the Masego Show on youtube.com about his -terrible- experience as a performing artist at the scope! Watch THIS for some laughs and eye rolling.

Have an awesome start of the week!

HEY HEY IT'S FRIDAY

Alright ya'll, you know what day it is! It's the day known for the most music downloading (besides Saturday). But this theory could get a run for its money after seeing the reaction to Era Hardaway's release of his mixtape "Slightly Hyped".

In case you missed it and aren't sure if the download is for you, here's a little description of Era. Era has the smooth rhythms reminiscent of Lupe in every song he raps on. If that weren't enough, he performs those rhythms over truly unique and bump'n beats. If you were wondering who is the next "big thing", well...here it is for sure. Check out his mixtape HERE. You'll love it!

Make sure ya'll have a good Friday, and remember: KEEP THE MUSIC FLOWING!

It's WEDNESDAYYYY

Hey all,

I know I've been slacking a little with updating. The sickness is still overtaking me...but I am feeling better! I should be updating more and more the next few days!

Alright, so I have a question for all you readers: With all the music-based television shows these days, what do you think of them and why? Which ones are the best, and which ones accurately portray the music business? Comment!! I would like your feedback!

"Already Dope" and How They Really Are

"Honestly...I don't like anything I make after I'm finished with it," Marques Boykin comments about his music.

"But why doesn't he?" I couldn't help but ask myself. As each half of the Already Dope duo, both Anthony Bryce and Marques Boykin promise listeners with deep seeded basses and layering that has an essence of "chill swag". With popular songs as the bottom layer, Already Dope adds their own spins to songs listeners already know-and this spiciness gives the tracks a new pop.

"It's scary how in-tune we are with our brains. Not to sound weird or anything haha. I'll be thinking of a song, and he'll start humming it. It's so weird," Anthony tells me.
"Okay, it's happened like twice haha" added Marques.
"Okay yeah, but that's still enough to be weird," finishes Anthony. Then a few minutes later, that very thing happened and they enthusiastically laughed together.

The funky flare the duo gives off can be seen in their music as well as in their complementary personalities. With small touches such as these, listeners will be given a musical treat guaranteed to give them something different to groove to.

While many producers start off just slightly tweaking popular tracks, songs remixed by Already Dope sound almost completely different, making any artist lucky to be featured on their beats. Another positive trait of this duo is the interesting combinations of songs mixed together on tracks. Just when you recognize a song, another one you know comes in...but not one you would expect. With this unpredictability, listeners can listen to any songs made by these two and never see what's coming-a great skill to accomplish, as music critics are born in the masses in these days of quick media spreading.

Having the opportunity to sit in as the two recorded new tracks with fellow student artist Cools Miliyan, the finished product was unexpectedly well put together. And not only are they a comfortable duo, they also are comfortable putting together beats separately. This independence is hard to come by in any music group, and it shows that they both collaborate to do what they love most: make music for people that just love a hot beat.

"I'll make something and send it to him. I wanna know what he thinks and see what he thinks should be added," explained Marques.

I'm sure we will all agree that we will like anything these two come up with.

Be sure to check out Already Dope's music on their site, located under the Artists tab of this blog.

Coffee House Open Mic Night!

Hey readers,

Sorry for the MIA author this weekend. I know the blog was sort of at a stand-still the past few days, as I was really sick with a cold/flu :( But never fear! I am updating it today!! :) as well as writing the Music Monday posting about Already Dope!!

So this past Friday, I ventured over to the ODU Baptist ministry building on 49th street (across from Dominion House) and checked out a neat student get together! Coffee House Open Mic night was in full swing, and a good number of students participated. Everyone was very friendly, welcoming and full of zest as each student went up onto the little stage and performed something. As well as student performances, there were free milkshakes and cups of coffee! I really enjoyed myself there, and I encourage anyone and everyone to go!!

I talked to Brett before leaving, and he said they plan on having the even once a month, on the second Friday of each month. Want more info?? Contact Brett Baddorf! He's a cool guy who's always looking for more students to participate!

TGIF everyone!

IMA Meeting- Feb. 16th

IMA held the second meeting of February in MGB 101A last night. Despite the rainy conditions, many students still came to enjoy the music showed off by the others.

The meeting started with auditions for ODU's annual March of Dimes event, which is held to raise funds for the research of premature birth defects and negative causes of early births. Four IMA members Brian Jerry, Kymani Dunn, Shamir Epps and John Dawson. Coordinators for the March of Dimes event were looking for live music to be included in the approx. 2 hour event. Last year's event showcased many student performers that did either original music or covers of popular love songs. Also featured were poets, artists and dancers, and all types of art are being searched for new performers for this year's event.

The rest of the meeting was filled with new tracks, some made even the same day of the meeting. Members applauded each others' works and gave constructive feedback on becoming better.

Artist "Cools Miliyan" performed a rap track in front of the group (and in front of an audience) for the first time. Although nervous and unsure at the start, he showed his passion for his verses once he felt comfortable.

" I'm really new to all this so I've never really performed in front of anyone before. It's something I want to get better at," he commented after his performance. All members showed a tight support which will hopefully ease Cools'  next performance.

Seeing how welcoming long-time members were to the new performers was refreshing, and just shows how inviting this association is to new faces. Be sure to come out to the next IMA meeting on March 1st to parttake.

Message from Brett Baddorf

Hey readers,
I have been in contact with Brett Baddorf very recently about how many students are expected to be at the Coffe House Open Mic Night on Friday:
"So far I have had one student for sure reserve a spot (but I know a few of my own students will perform as well). Usually we have about 9-12 people perform depending on how much time (and if they perform at the same time). And it would be great if you came to take pictures. I'm hoping this one will be a good number of students. I've got my students focused on inviting more people as the week moves on.
Thanks!"
It would be great if some of you readers got involved and performed a number! I will be there to take some pictures, and I would love to see a good number of students!

Don't Forget!

Hey all,

I hope you liked the publication yesterday for the very first Music Monday featuring artist Micah Davis! Be sure to check in to the blog every Monday for a featured artist and his/her biography!

The Many Facets of Masego: A Micah Davis Introduction

Let’s come to one conclusion: we all have those days where we want variety. This is true for many items, but most of all for music. What happens when the fulfillment of variety meets talent? A musical mixture called Masego. Sharing the face of Micah Davis, Masego is an artist that balances old with new, classical teachings with modern flare, and toe-tapping beats layered with familiar sounding melodies. Micah Davis, current freshman here at Old Dominion University, provides listeners with all of these elements, taking ideas from the imagination and eloquently stitching them together in harmony.
“The people I heard, it was just like really ‘thug’ music. ‘Smoke weed, get biddies,’ and all that stuff like that,” said Davis, “And I was like, I don’t wanna do that. I wanna make music that benefits my community, so I started doing it and writing lyrics.”
It’s not just important for artists today to get an audience to move and share the love of music, but it’s also important for them to be able to think about what they’re listening to. Usually cleverness is pushed to its limit when it comes to rapping, but Masego gives you something more to chew on other than words that just flow together.
“I would say my main purpose is to provoke thought. Think deeper into a situation,” commented Davis.
Masego’s first mixtape, “Sides of Masego Volume 1: Sax” is part of a three-set mixtape collection. The mixtapes aim to provide listeners with different leading instruments over tracks produced by Davis. This idea of changing style is the key to leading a successful career in music, as it gives the listeners something different every time. There’s nothing more disappointing than a whole collection that sounds like one long song on repeat. Variety still remains to be the best fitting adjective to describe Masego as a whole, along with the runner-up word, “relatable”.
“Like, the purpose of “Sides of Masego” was to put sides of myself. I don’t want people to just say ‘oh you’re the guy that plays sax’, I want it to be ‘you’re the guy that just plays musical instruments.'”
On a personal level, Micah Davis as a musician seems to be an artist with his head on a good pair of shoulders. A son of a pastor, Davis strides through life with morals about treating people right and just keeping everyone on a level of high esteem-without the compromise of values. He doesn’t need to curse in his music to get a point across and he believes in rapping about real life situations that are relatable to a wide spectrum of ages, cultures and beliefs.
At the end of the interview, he had one more message for the readers of this blog.
“There’s no gimic like ‘hey, please support someone who sucks’. I wanna give you good music, I want your feedback and for you to communicate with me”.

Be sure to check out “Sides of Masego Volume 1: Sax” on his website. See Masego on the list of atists under the Musicians/Producers tab. You won’t be disappointed.

Masego-Coming Later Today

Later today brings in the very first artist biography. Featuring Masego, the biography will provide much insight on music and give readers a "behind-the-scenes" look at how music is created from within each artist and where the music comes from.

Masego proves to be one unique artist, mixing genres of music to produce mixtapes that feel like a breath of fresh air. Be sure to keep checking in to learn about the many sides of Masego: looking inside a well-rounded artist.

Author's First IMA Meeting

Having just found out about the meeting, I sporatically grabbed whatever objects I needed and ran to MGB 101 where the ODU Independent Music Association was having their first February meeting. Just twice a month, the IMA congregates in the lecture room to showcase each student's most recent projects. For about an hour and a half, each student took turns going on the stage and talking about what they were about to perform. Where it came from, why they wrote it, and how far along they were in music projects were some of the ideas each person spoke about on the mic.

Then came the time to show the other 20 students in the room their talent. Ranging from R&B to Hip-Hop, Rap, Electronic, Pop and House music, the meeting vibed on a positive frequency.

After the performances, Darius Mines ( the leader of the group) asked, "Alright ya'll, how about some feedback on that one??" Not only did the students give constructive criticism, but they also respected one another. Not one person laughed at, made fun of or disregarded the other. If there were venues in the area that had a particular audience that would be ideal for a musician, they let them know. If a place had a nice set-up or noteworthy acoustics, they would tell one another. And when someone ever felt a doubt about themselves, they spoke up about that too. "If you would just like..listen to how nice you sound and realized you sounded nice, it would make that performance THAT much better," commented Shamir Epps after a performance by the group's President Lindsey Anderson.

With a group providing students the opportunity to learn from one another and share their love of music with other aspiring musicians, the ODU IMA is definitely on the right track.

The IMA will be meeting next on February 16th, 2012 in MGB 101. Be sure to come out if you love music and wanna be part of this collaborative effort to spread that love.
